Description: Develops, plans, and implements environmental, facility, and program planning activities, and oversees all architectural and urban design for all campuses of the university. The University Architect (UA) serves as an “aesthetic conscience” for the University campuses, and directs all long-range campus planning. The University Architect works with the senior leadership of Facilities Management and Campus Development to lead the decision- making process for projects and tasks that affect the overall planning and image of the University. The University Architect directs land use, zoning and regional development initiatives; coordinates preliminary architectural studies for new structures and alterations to existing structures and site development. The University Architect, also maintains community relationships with neighborhoods and business areas surrounding the University Campuses, and advises the University leadership on their planning and design projects affecting the Tulane community.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to gather and thoroughly analyze information in order to make well-founded recommendations to the University’s senior administrationAbility to work collegially with a wide variety of constituencies possessing various levels of planning and design knowledgeManagement skills, particularly in decision-makingAbility to perform duties at other than normal working hours and days as required by projects or tasksAbility to utilize design software programs, including AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite, and to learn new software programsSelf-motivated who can take initiative to resolve problemsPass a background checkExcellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to interact professionally and courteously with internal and external contacts at all levelsExcellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize projects and work independently in meeting assigned goalsCurrent LEED accreditation (such as LEED Green Associate) or ability to achieve within first 90 days of employmentLouisiana Architectural registration required for the UA within six months of hire dateLouisiana Architectural registration or NCARB Certification required at the time of application
Required Education and/or ExperienceBachelor’s Degree in Architecture from an accredited institutionTen years of directly related experience in architecture or environmental design
Preferred QualificationsMaster’s Degree in architecture, environmental studies or related fieldExperience working in a university or institutional setting and/or in an academic environment with students
