Description: Title of Position: Prison Education, Vocational Teacher- Culinary Arts at Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution (BWCI)Reports to: Teacher/Supervisor of Level 5 prisonDescription of Position: The Culinary Arts Vocational Prison Education Teacher position is responsible for instructing incarcerated students in the basics of food preparation terms, concepts and methods used in the restaurant industry. Basic kitchen and dining room safety, sanitations, equipment maintenance and operation procedures are also taught. Employability and job readiness skills are also integrated into instruction preparing students for success upon re-entry into their communities.Major Responsibilities:
- Instruct in culinary arts/food service program to address the educational needs of inmate residents of the correctional institution.
- Responsible for implementing the adult education curriculum leading to a vocational certificate within a quality educational delivery system at the correctional institution under the direction of the Teacher/Supervisor.
- Model effective adult learning practices in the instruction of adult inmates in the vocational field of choice.
- Maintain data and complete federal and state reports for assigned inmates.
- Attend IEP meetings, when necessary.
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Ensure that federal and state policies and procedures are followed in the classroom including but are not limited to WIA – Title II, Perkins/Vocational, and /or IDEA.
- Work cooperatively with the Department of Correction upon request of the Teacher/Supervisor to promote adult vocational education opportunities at the institution.
- Work with the Teacher/Supervisor upon request to recruit, assign and schedule inmates to educational programs in the correctional institution.
- Function as part of an adult education services team to transition inmates to the community and into employment.
- Plan for and provide apprenticeship opportunities for inmates in the program in conjunction with the Teacher/Supervisor.
- Maintain security and inventory of all tools, supplies, and equipment at all times.
- Assist the Teacher/Supervisor in preparing and managing instructional budget for the designated technical/instructional area.
Essential Qualifications and SkillsEducation:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required.
- Must possess current Delaware Licensure (14 DE Admin Code 1500-Professional Standards Board).
- Must possess current Delaware Certification in at least one content area (14 DE Admin Code 1500 – Professional Standards Board).
- ServSafe Instructor Certification; ServSafe Trainer Certified preferable.
Experience:
- Minimum of three (3) years (full-time) vocational teaching experience in adult education and/or correctional settings preferred.
- Experience working in adult and/or correctional setting preferred.
Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication, facilitation, and organizational skills, as well as excellent listening and synthesizing skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of educational equity and multicultural education.
- Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and negotiating skills.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to perform responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Capable of setting priorities and working in collaboration with others and working under pressure.
- Be able to proactively problem-solve with professionalism.
- Must be experienced in exercising discretion and confidentiality in all professional duties.
Salary:
Salary will be computed in accordance with the education, experience, and training of the individual selected and in accordance with salary schedules for employees of the Department of Education. Direct deposit of payroll checks is a condition of state employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made after approximately one month of employment.Notes:
