Description: SUMMARYThe Division of Administrative Law Appeals (“DALA”) is an independent, quasi-judicial agency that hears and resolves challenges to decisions made by Massachusetts state agencies, as well as disputes among parents, school districts, private schools and state educational agencies. DALA’s General Jurisdiction Unit hears and resolves appeals from approximately 20 state agencies, including cases involving public pensions, wage and hour citations, and the discipline of doctors, emergency medical technicians, and nurse aides.As a law clerk, you will assist the magistrates in the General Jurisdiction Unit through every stage of a case, including preparing for hearings, reviewing and summarizing case files, attending hearings, conducting research and drafting decisions. We are seeking candidates who can work at least 20 hours a week, and we would prefer individuals who are available full-time. This is a temporary position, through June 30, 2025, to assist the General Jurisdiction Unit to address its case backlog.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.As a law clerk, you will:
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis position does not exercise supervisory responsibilities.QUALIFICATIONSThe successful candidate will have prior legal experience possibly in the form of internships or education. The successful candidate will have the ability to understand and synthesize evidence, statutes, regulations, and case law. They will possess strong legal research and writing skills, as well as strong communication and analytical skills. They will have the demonstrated ability to write memoranda of law analyzing complex legal questions. They also will be organized, able to work independently, and be proficient with Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel. Bar admission is not required.
