This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement.Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor. The PositionSan Diego City College is seeking a new faculty member to join its award winning Design program. One of the three colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus in the heart of downtown, providing academic and vocational offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The ideal candidate has professional experience as a designer but seeks to share that knowledge and mentor students to be prepared to work in the design industry. As an open access educational institution, we desire someone who understands the role an affordable but extremely high-quality design program plays in building diversity and equity in our industry.We are currently accepting applications for the position of Assistant Professor, Design at City College beginning Spring 2025. Hours and days may vary Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. The selected candidate must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department’s needs. Assignment may include some combination of day, evening, and/or distance education classes. While the current vacancy is at San Diego City College, applicants should understand they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.
Major Responsibilities

• Reports to the Dean of the School of Arts, Humanities, Communications, and Telecommunications.
• Teach classes with an emphasize on real world skills with a mentorship-based approach.
• Create an equitable and inclusive learning environment that effectively supports students from diverse backgrounds and special populations.
• Stay current on design trends and skills that are important for students to build industry ready portfolios.
• Collaborate with other Design faculty on budgeting, curriculum development, and other administrative tasks.
• Maintain regular communication with students, faculty and program personnel.
• Maintain and/or build relationships with industry partners and transfer institutions.

QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Any Bachelor’s degree AND two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the area of assignment; OR,
• Any Associate degree AND six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the area of assignment; OR,
• The equivalent.

Desired Qualifications

• At least five years of professional work experience in the design field.
• Extensive teaching and mentorship experience in design, particularly at the postsecondary level.
• In-depth understanding of current design industry practices and processes.
• Advanced working knowledge of industry-standard design tools and software, including, but not limited to, Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe After Effects.
• Ability to create effective classroom presentations, demonstrating advanced proficiency in teaching techniques and subject matter.
• Ability to instruct and counsel students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students, students with disabilities, non-traditional students, and those from underrepresented communities.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely in both formats.
• Relevant administrative experience, including curriculum development, program management, leadership, committee involvement, and strategic planning.
• Experience building and maintaining academic, community, and professional relationships.
• Commitment to professional development and staying current with processes and advancements in the design field.
• Skill and experience in collaborating effectively with faculty, students, administrators, staff, and community groups in a cooperative and professional manner.

Tentative Timeline (Subject to Amendments)
Conditions of Employment:SELECTED CANDIDATE IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT:

• Submit “official” college transcripts as stated on application (even if a degree is not a requirement for this position);
• Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam for initial appointment (Note: The certificate must be renewed every 4 years as a condition of continuing employment);
• Have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer at the District’s expense (Clearance must be received prior to first day of employment);
• Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States as required by the I9 Employment Eligibility Verification form;
• Attend a new hire processing appointment in People, Culture, and Technology Services located at the District Administrative Offices; AND,
• Employed on an initial contract of one (1) year that is eligible for renewal annually for up to a subsequent one-year period.
