Job Description SummaryThis tenure-track Assistant Professor position entails Teaching Activities including preparation and instruction for Art Education courses, designing graduate and undergraduate course curriculum, developing and implementing new teaching methods to reflect changes in the field, mentoring and evaluating students, and serving as Department Liaison to the College of Education.Scholarship & Research including conducting research leading to publication and engaging in other creative and/or scholarly activities to meet national, state and CSU standards.Service Activities including assessment, advising, recruiting, creating interest and understanding among students, serving on faculty- and student-oriented committees, related professional organizations, and participating in faculty governance in the department and university.The successful candidate will be required to teach courses with the following subject matter: Elementary Art Methods (PK-8), Secondary Art Methods, Clinical Experiences in Pre-Student Teaching, and Supervise student teaching including regular contact with both the students and the field teachers. Teach other art foundation courses as appropriate to department needs.Ability and experience to teach other Studio or Art History subjects is also desired. Art Ed faculty collaborate on interdisciplinary initiatives and opportunities for student engagement on campus and in the PK-12 community fostering enrollment and relationships with local schools.All faculty positions are governed by the tenets of a collective bargaining agreement. Faculty are hired, evaluated, retained, promoted, and tenured on the basis of conditions covered in the union contract. Primary duties include teaching and related activities assigned during a 9- or 12-month year. It is expected that each faculty member engages in all three activities of teaching, research/creative activities and service.Teaching: faculty members are expected to teach 4 to 8 credit courses per year; develop syllabi, teaching materials (ability to organize, analyze and present knowledge or materials) related to courses taught; and collaborate with other faculty in the development of new courses and/or programs. Some disciplines require discipline specific certifications and/or licensure in the field for practice or functioning within the State of Illinois; degree specific course work and/or graduate degrees in the discipline. In addition, faculty advise students, participate in professional development activities, as well as engage in assessment activities related to accreditation and program evaluation.Research: Faculty members are expected to engage in research and/or creative activity germane to an academic discipline, which results in submissions and material as works in refereed, professional and/or general readership publications; submit and receive externally awarded grants; submit proposals for presentations at academic and professional conferences; or engage in creative pursuits if in a creative, performing or theatrical arts discipline.Service: Faculty members are expected to serve on committees, programs, and/or special task forces at the department, college, university, professional and community levels; assume leadership roles over time and as they increase in rank. These activities are not for compensation and have a relationship to the employee’s assigned responsibilities and to the university.This position is eligible for health, dental, life insurance and other benefits through Chicago State University. Required EducationA doctorate (PhD or EdD) is required and meets rank requirements from a discipline within the unit as defined by the collective bargaining unit.
Required Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesExperience working with a diverse population of students. Preferred experience leading collaborative and community-based artwork. String exhibition record in the field. Depth and breadth in the studio art disciplines. Ability to work across disciplines.
Preferred QualificationsEvidence of dynamic teaching skills at the college level is required. The equivalent of at least three years of full-time teaching experience with children and youth. Must be well-versed in a wide range of contemporary approaches and critical issues in both art and art education and have a track record of successful collaborations.Candidates should be active in their field and able to provide a portfolio of creative work that has been showcased within professional settings. The ideal candidate will have experience in academic leadership and/or experience teaching within K-12 educational systems.

The portfolio must include at least 10 examples of work by the applicant and 10 examples of student work from courses taught. Examples of syllabi and course material are alo accepted.
