Description: DescriptionThe Assistant Law Director provides support to the Law Director, the City of Newark and contractual jurisdictions within Licking County. This position involves assisting in legal research, drafting legal documents, representing the City of Newark in legal proceedings, providing legal advice to various departments and officials, prosecutes criminal cases in the Licking County Municipal Court, handles a variety of civil cases, including but not limited to, contracts, employment law and compliance issues and performs other duties as required.Examples of DutiesLegal Research and Analysis:

  • Conduct legal research on a variety of topics including local, state, and federal laws, statutes, regulations, case law, and court decisions.
  • Analyze and interpret laws, regulations, ordinances, and contracts to ensure compliance and provide accurate legal advice.

Drafting and Reviewing Legal Documents:

  • Prepare and review legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, and legal opinions.
  • Ensure that all legal documents are accurate, clear, and comply with applicable laws and regulations.

Litigation Support:

  • Assist in representing the City of Newark in civil litigation cases, including pre-trial negotiations, bench trials, jury trials, and appeals.
  • Assist in the prosecution of criminal cases for the City of Newark and contractual jurisdictions, including pre-trial negotiations, trials and appeals.
  • Prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents required for litigation and criminal prosecution.
  • Conduct depositions, gather evidence, and interview witnesses as needed.

Advisory Services:

  • Provide legal advice and guidance to elected officials, department heads, and staff on a wide range of legal issues.
  • Attend meetings of the City of Newark Council, boards, and commissions as needed to provide legal counsel and support.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements and mitigate legal risks.
  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations that may affect the City of Newark and advise on necessary adjustments.

Dispute Resolution: * Engage in alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation and arbitration, to settle disputes outside of court.

  • Negotiate settlements and agreements to resolve legal disputes efficiently and effectively.

Training and Education:
Conduct training sessions for employees and officials on legal topics, policies, and procedures.

  • Stay updated on legal developments and trends relevant to municipal law and share knowledge with colleagues.

Special Projects:

  • Assist in special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Law Director.
  • Collaborate with other departments and agencies on interdisciplinary projects requiring legal expertise.

Typical Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Ohio State Bar and in good standing.
  • Preferred 2-4 years of experience in municipal law, litigation, public administration, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations affecting municipalities.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, officials, and the public.
  • Proficiency in the use of legal research tools and office software.
