– Identification of structural controls on groundwater movement, availability, and quality.
– Constructing groundwater models to determine groundwater budgets and transport processes.
– Measuring and analyzing factors contributing to land motion including groundwater pumping and isostatic rebound.
– Characterization of the hydrology, water-quality, and ecology of small urban watersheds and determination of the effect of implemented restoration efforts.
– Determination of nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended-sediment loads and trends in streams and rivers of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
– Characterization of emerging threats to surface-water and groundwater systems that include harmful algal blooms, perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances, and waste-water contaminants.
– Performing statistical data analyses on data sets to characterize current conditions and to identify trends in conditions and interprets results.
– Communicating findings from complex hydrologic investigations in technical reports and oral presentations to a wide variety of audiences, from technical experts to the general public.Work Environment and Physical Demands: Substantial amount of work carried out at locations physically removed from main unit. Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Driver’s License/Driving Record – You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements:(1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • Pre-Employment Medical – Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.

QualificationsBASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.**ORB. A combination of education and experience–education equivalent to one of the majors shown in “A” above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above.For GS-13:In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level:One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.Examples of such experience may include planning, executing and reporting on original physical science studies or ongoing physical science studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, physical scientists have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.Education
