Position SummaryThe Theatre Arts Division of The Collinsworth School of Performing Arts at California Baptist University invites applications for a tenure-track full-time position as an Assistant or Associate Professor of Theatrical Design with an appointment to begin Fall 2025.Position
As an institution committed to The Great Commission, we seek someone who is a practicing Christian and is dedicated to the work of faith-integration in the theatre arts classroom.Teaching and Curriculum DevelopmentDuties include teaching a full load and the administrative management of the Design for Stage and Screen concentration. In the classroom faith-integration assignments are expected. The successful candidate will be expected to serve as a recruiter, contacting prospective students and attending recruitment events. See “Teaching Responsibilities” below for further information.Production Oversight & Design ResponsibilitiesThis position reports to the Theatre Arts Division Director and oversees the work of the Technical Director of Theatre Arts. The successful candidate will coordinate with other staff to fill the design needs of the theatre season, including student positions and contracted services. This position will be expected to be personally responsible for a minimum of 2 mainstage production designs each semester, be they scenic, lighting, costumes, or sound. There will be the opportunity to direct one production a season, if desired. They will work with the staff, contracted workers, and the division director to stay within budgets. They will attend all division production meetings and faculty and staff meetings.Service & Professional DevelopmentThe successful candidate will need to pursue creative and service opportunities. Such work would include the likes of service on university committees, design and production direction for CBU’s The Courtyard Shakespeare Festival, CBU Christmas, professional association conference attendance and responsibilities, and any professional theatre opportunities. This position expected to receive training as a Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival respondent and respond to a minimum of 1-2 productions a year in the Inland Empire Circuit for Region 8.
Pay Range
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal (MFA) degree in a theatrical design field by the time of appointment
  • Experience designing in a minimum of two of the following areas: lighting, scenery, costuming, or sound.
  • Significant professional experience in theatrical design, with a strong portfolio showcasing a variety of projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with current drawing, rendering, and drafting practices and software, such as: hand drafting, traditional drawing and painting, Vectorworks, Adobe Creative Suite, Procreate, AutoCAD, and SketchUp.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Strong understanding of current trends and technologies in theatrical design.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students and faculty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience directing undergraduate productions.
  • At least 3 years working in scenic, lighting, and/or props shops
  • Ability to lift over 50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in mentorship or advising students in design-related projects.
  • Record of professional or academic publications in the field.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations related to theatre and design, such as USITT

Teaching ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will teach a full 12-12 load, which includes oversight of the technical theatre practicum each semester. Responsibilities include the teaching of lower and upper division undergraduate courses related to design and technical theatre, as well as general theatre arts courses as needed, including but not limited to subject areas such as theatre history, makeup, or story structure and analysis. The successful candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduate student designers for mainstage productions.The candidate will also be expected to maintain an active program of scholarship in the field and service to the university and community.
